Beauty and the Brain

August 2009

Southbank Centre commissioned film by young people at Lambeth Academy made in collaboration with Dr Lizzie Burns and Carl Stevenson, Beauty and the Brain investigated the physical intricacy and mystery of the organ responsible for all that we feel and experience.

Six young people explored the brain as a functional and aesthetic object through a series of filmed experiments. Their ideas, dreams and memories formed a soundscape for unexpected imagery of brains including sculptures floating in a pond and brains made of ice melting on pavements.

A film was shown on the Level 2 Foyer and projected onto external walls of Royal Festival Hall after sunset. A series of photographs are also exhibited in the Saison Poetry Library.

This project is part of the Learning and Participation programme at Southbank Centre and is inspired by Walking in My Mind at the Hayward Gallery.
