London Earth Creature

Festival of the World at Southbank Centre
Summer of 2012

London Earth Creature was designed by London’s smallest architects – children from the extraordinary Hounslow Heath Infants School, in collaboration with Small Earth. The playscape is made using ‘rammed earth’ structures, a technique devised by Iranian architect Nader Khalili that has transformed low cost housing for communities in Africa and Asia.

The organic Gaudiesque sculptural forms contrasted with the surrounding concrete environment and enabled children and adults to climb, play and seek shelter through the festival. An in-door structure was also built for the Festival of the World museum.
